San Francisco on Highway 120.

Groveland is just 26 miles west of the enentrance to Yosemite National Park.
Our historic town is the most convenient gateway to treasured landmark.
The Miwok Indians found abundance in the fertile valley near were our town now stands. But in 1849, this all changed when gold was discovered in Cloma just 50 miles northwest of Groveland, Like many of the gold rush towns in California, it was the gold that promoted settlement of the area by those who were not Miworks.
Originally named Garrote, Groveland found its rush of miners after gold was discovered late in 1848 by James Savage. The town was renamed to Savage's Diggins. It would be only a year later the 'Savage's Diggins' would be renamed to Groveland. Our town was officially founded in 1849. It is also said that the Iron Door Salon is the oldest operating salon in California. It was open even during proabition. The Feds had to come all the way from Fresno to close it down. When the Feds left, the bar was reopened. The Feds got tired of this and just let it alone.
